What is

art therapy?

Art therapy is a form of therapy where the client uses art making and the creative process to explore and work with the issues they want to investigate.

Sometimes it is hard to express oneself through words alone. Through making art we can find different ways to look at what is holding us back from enjoying full health and well being. Creating art can both release emotional energy and allow us to see things from a different perspective. The art making process itself can also be therapeutic. We can bring about change and transformation by working hands-on with our stories and narratives.

The role of

the art therapist

Art therapists are trained at a post graduate level.

The art therapist is there to keep the process safe and supported.  Helping you work at a pace that is right for you. Sharing strategies which prompt the finding of meaning in your art and your life.

You may work spontaneously or the art therapist may make suggestions of art materials or give art directives to foster exploration.

Do I need to be good at art to do art therapy?

Not at all. To do art therapy there is absolutely no need to have any art experience as we are focusing on the process rather than the product.
